The Match Narrative
Wrexham, who had already claimed a Premier League scalp earlier in the tournament, signaled their intent early. In the 18th minute, Sam Smith latched onto a brilliant long pass from Callum Doyle, coolly stroking the ball past Robert Sanchez to send the Racecourse into a frenzy.
Chelsea struggled to break down Wrexham’s organized block, eventually leveling just before halftime through an unfortunate own goal by Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo after an Alejandro Garnacho effort was cleared off the line.
The second half was a breathless affair. Callum Doyle restored Wrexham’s lead in the 78th minute with a clever flick from a Josh Windass strike, but Chelsea responded almost immediately, with Josh Acheampong smashing an unstoppable effort into the roof of the net to make it 2-2.
The Turning Point
The tie took a decisive turn in stoppage time when Wrexham midfielder George Dobson was shown a straight red card following a VAR intervention for a challenge on Garnacho. Reduced to 10 men for extra time, the Red Dragons were eventually overrun.
Alejandro Garnacho became the hero for the Blues, volleying home a precise cross from Dario Essugo just six minutes into the first period of extra time. Wrexham refused to lie down, and nearly found a dramatic late equalizer when Lewis Brunt turned the ball home, only for VAR to rule it out for offside. Finally, in the 125th minute, Joao Pedro added a late fourth to seal Chelsea’s spot in the quarter-finals.
Post-Match Reaction
“I thought VAR was meant to be for clear and obvious decisions,” Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson lamented after the game, clearly frustrated by the late red card that hampered his side’s chances in extra time.
On the other side, Chelsea’s Alejandro Garnacho was relieved to escape North Wales with a win. “It was a battle,” the winger admitted. “It’s always a fight when you come to this kind of stadium—it can be harder than a Premier League game at times.”
