As the Black Stars camp opens in Vienna, the spotlight has fallen on four men who could define Ghana’s defensive and attacking depth at the 2026 World Cup. Coach Otto Addo has been clear: “Reputation counts for nothing; form is everything.” Here is why these four were chosen.
The inclusion of these defensive reinforcements is timely, especially given the high-scoring drama we saw in the Barcelona vs Newcastle 7-2 thrashing.

1. Derrick Luckassen (Pafos FC, Cyprus)

The most experienced of the quartet, the 30-year-old former Dutch youth international finally made the switch to Ghana. Standing at 1.88m, Luckassen brings a physical presence the Black Stars have lacked. Having recently scored Pafos’ first-ever Champions League goal, his ability to threat from set-pieces and his “European education” at PSV and AZ Alkmaar make him a direct competitor for Alexander Djiku’s starting spot.

2. Patrick Pfeiffer (SV Darmstadt 98, Germany)

The “Giant of Darmstadt” has been on the GFA’s radar for three years. Pfeiffer is a modern ball-playing center-back. His composure in building play from the back is exactly what Otto Addo needs to implement a more possession-based style. His familiarity with the German system will be vital when Ghana faces the Nationalmannschaft in Stuttgart next week.

3. Marvin Senaya (AJ Auxerre, France)

With Alidu Seidu and Tariq Lamptey facing fitness battles, Senaya’s emergence in Ligue 1 is a godsend. The Auxerre right-back is known for his recovery speed and crossing accuracy. Interestingly, the GFA had to move quickly to secure his commitment amid strong interest from the Togolese national team.

4. Daniel Kwasi Agyei (Kocaelispor, Turkey)

The wildcard. Born in London and a product of the Burnley academy, Agyei has been on a scoring tear in the Turkish Süper Lig with four goals this season. Unlike a traditional #9, Agyei operates best as an inverted winger or a second striker. With Mohammed Kudus sidelined through injury, Agyei’s “intelligent movement” could provide the creative spark needed in Vienna.
